PRP Injections

PRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, uses a component of your blood that contains nutrients and regenerative cells. Isolating and injecting your own blood plasma into a specific area can deliver a more concentrated dose of these healing compounds and accelerate both wound healing and strengthening of tissues.

When you come in for this treatment, we will start by drawing some of your blood and isolating the plasma with a centrifuge. We will then inject it into the desired treatment area. This could be the scalp for hair regeneration or the skin to provide a smoother and tighter complexion thanks to PRP’s collagen-boosting properties. PRP is also used to speed up healing in soft tissue injuries and tendonitis.

  • What are they?

These injections, which are made up of cells (platelets) that are taken from your own blood, are used for treating an increasing number of medical conditions. Platelets are a type of blood cell that enables your blood to clot and thereby stop bleeding from injuries. But importantly, they also play a role in healing.

  • Why get this treatment?

For most injuries, the body heals itself fairly quickly and doesn’t require special interventions. PRP treatment is most commonly used to treat conditions where the healing process is frustratingly slow, such as injuries to the muscles, tendons, or bones. These slow-healing injuries can take months or even years to resolve, but platelet-rich plasma therapy can speed up the process. Most patients will encounter platelet-rich plasma therapy as an elective procedure for sports injuries, chronic tendon injuries, and hip or knee osteoarthritis. It is also being used in stimulating hair growth for baldness in both males and females.

They have been used as treatment for over 30 years, but in recent years there has been an explosion of its use in muskulo-skeletal injuries, as well as other applications. At this time, our PRP physician treates acne cysts with PRP as well as soft tissue injuries.

  • How do they work?

PRP concentrates can stimulate the release of growth factors to jump-start healing in chronic injuries and accelerate the acute injury repair process.

  • But is it safe?

The main advantages of PRP include its safety and the ingenious preparation techniques of current commercial devices to prepare a biologic that can be used in a number of conditions. Most importantly, PRP is an autologous product, meaning it comes from you, with no known significant adverse effects, in contrast to the commonly used corticosteroid injections (which certainly also have their place in treating certain problems).

Not everyone is a candidate for PRP injections. You should not get a PRP injection if you:

    • Have low platelet counts
    • Take blood thinners
    • Have cancer
    • Are pregnant
    • Have an active infection
  • What’s the procedure?

Blood will be drawn from your vein by the doctor or technician and the tube will be placed in a machine called a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood.

Once platelets are injected into the area that’s being treated, these cells break down and release many growth factors, which are compounds that help cells repair and renew, as well as releasing other chemicals that have anti-inflammatory and pain-killing properties. This is thought to accelerate your body’s healing process, a process called regeneration.

  • Who is doing the treatment?

Dr. Sarwat Ibrahim is a highly skilled and experienced primary care physician. He has been certified in the field of PRP injection, as well as in Botox treatments. He is certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) for PRP and BOTOX therapy. He looks forward to consulting with you to determine whether you would be a good candidate for such injection therapy.

Botox Injections

Botox is short for botulinum toxin A, a type of neurotoxin derived from bacteria. When used in small quantities, it is an effective beauty treatment and a therapeutic pain reliever. It works by temporarily blocking signals from the nerves at the injection site to the brain. Effects last anywhere from two to six months.

Since Botox inhibits nerve signals, the muscles won’t contract as strongly as usual, leading to smoother-looking skin with fewer wrinkles. In addition, it’s an effective treatment for muscle spasms and tension, which can therefore relieve chronic jaw pain, headaches and more..

  • How do Botox injections work?

Botox injections use a toxin called Neurotoxin to temporarily cause muscle paralysis.

  • What is Botox used for?

The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes.

These injections are also used to treat other conditions Examples include:

    1. Cervical dystonia. In this painful condition, your neck muscles contract involuntarily causing your head to twist or turn into an uncomfortable position.
    2. Muscle Spasm. Some neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, or after stroke, can cause the muscles of your limbs to be contracted. These contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections.
    3. Hyperhidrosis. In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature isn't hot and you're not exerting yourself. Excessive sweating can occur in axilla, palms, and soles. Botox helps this.
    4. Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency.
    5. Bladder dysfunction. Botox injections can also help reduce urinary incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.
    6. Teeth Grinding that can affect the TMJ (jaw joints) and teeth. Botox can relax the masseter muscles that are contracting excessively, leading to teeth grinding.
  • Risks

Botox injections are generally quite safe when performed by an experienced doctor. Possible side effects and complications include:
